What is Praziquantel + Pyrantel + Febantel?
Active Ingredients: Praziquantel, Pyrantel Pamoate, Febantel
Praziquantel + Pyrantel Pamoate + Febantel Tablets are a broad-spectrum dewormer drug used to treat and control parasitic infections in dogs or puppies. This combination offers a safe and effective treatment for a broad spectrum of parasites, such as ascarids, whipworms, hookworms, and tapeworms.
These tablets contain three active ingredients with different mechanisms of action. This effectively treats many types of worms, including Toxocara canis, Toxascaris leonina, Uncinaria stenocephala, Ancylostoma caninum, Trichuris vulpis, Echinococcus spp., Taenia spp., and Dipylidium caninum.
Praziquantel is a pyrazine isoquinoline derivative. This compound causes severe damage to the parasite's integument, which results in the contraction and paralysis of the parasites.
Pyrantel Pamoate is a tetrahydropyrimidine derivative. It works by depolarizing neuromuscular function, which leads to the paralysis of the worm. Pyrantel pamoate targets hookworms and ascarids by affecting the cholinergic receptors of the nematode, which leads to spastic paralysis. The peristaltic action of the intestinal tract expels the parasite from the body.
Febantel is an organic compound classified as a diaryl thioether. It is metabolized to Fenbendazole. It is thought to work by interfering with energy metabolism within the parasite. It is effective against nematode parasites, including whipworms. It is quickly absorbed and metabolized within the animal. It disrupts the parasite's energy metabolism, causing a breakdown in energy exchange and hindering glucose uptake.
This product contains three active ingredients with different modes of action and spectrums of activity. Praziquantel specifically targets cestodes (tapeworms). After absorption and metabolism in the liver, praziquantel is excreted in bile. Once in the digestive tract, it exhibits its ability to kill tapeworms. Following exposure to praziquantel, tapeworms lose their natural resistance to digestion by the host mammal. Whole tapeworms, including their scolices, are rarely passed after praziquantel administration. Instead, stool typically contains disintegrated and partially digested pieces of tapeworms. Most tapeworms are digested and do not appear in the feces.
Laboratory efficacy and clinical studies have shown that each of the three active ingredients operates independently without mutual interference. This combined tablet formulation offers a broad spectrum of activity against the specified species of intestinal helminths.

In cases when reinfections occur, owners should aim for prevention, because in other cases, retreatment might be necessary. This is especially true in cases of Dipylidum caninum where reinfections occur frequently. For controlling Echinococcus multilocularis, a program of regular treatment every 21 to 26 days is required.
How does Praziquantel + Pyrantel + Febantel help in cases of Echinococcus multilocularis?
This is a parasitic infection that affects wild animals, but it can be also transmitted to domesticated dogs and humans. The adult tapeworm is between 1 and 4mm and it resides in the intestinal tract of the host. The eggs of the parasite are then shed in the feces, and rodents can transmit this disease to dogs. After canines consume a rodent infected with the cysts, the larvae within the cyst develops into adult tapeworms and affect their intestinal tract. The eggs can be passed in the feces of the canid in around 28 days later.
The diagnosis of this disease is difficult because the adult tapeworms produce no clinical signs of infection. Dogs that are diagnosed with this disease should be immediately treated with this drug to prevent the exposure of humans to infective eggs and to break the parasite’s life cycle. The recommended therapeutic dose leads to 100% efficacy, and if the dog is exposed to wild rodents, re-treatment at 21- to 26-day intervals is recommended to prevent the shedding of infectious eggs.
Is only this drug effective in treating E. multilocularis?
No, other measures need to be taken. Strict hygienic precautions should be taken when handling dogs that are infected. The animals should be retreated at intervals of 28 days. Infected animals should also be separated from healthy animals and their feces should be incinerated or autoclaved. Other possibilities are soaking the feces in sodium hypochlorite solution of 3.75% or greater concentrations. All areas where the animals were should be thoroughly cleaned with sodium hypochlorite to prevent the spreading of the disease.
