What is the evidence for Omega-3’s impact on neurological and cognitive development for pregnant women?
Omega-3 fatty acids, rich in EPA and DHA, offer numerous health benefits for pregnant women and infants. These healthy fats possess anti-inflammatory properties, promote enhanced bone development, and support eye health. However, the most notable advantage for pregnant women is their significant impact on the cognitive development of children in the future. Various studies corroborate the positive effects of omega supplementation on maternal health.
Cognitive assessment of children at age 2(1/2) years after maternal fish oil supplementation in pregnancy: a randomised controlled trial
The primary aim of this study was to investigate the impact of omega-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acid (n-3 LC PUFA) supplementation on the cognitive development of children whose mothers received high-dose fish oil during pregnancy.
Conducted in Perth, Western Australia, Australia, this double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial involved 98 pregnant women who received supplementation from 20 weeks of gestation until delivery, with assessments of their infants conducted at approximately 2 and a half years of age. The supplementation consisted of fish oil, renowned for its rich content of DHA and EPA.
Various tests were administered, including evaluations of infant growth and developmental quotients using the Griffiths Mental Development Scales, receptive language assessed through the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test, and behavioral observations utilizing the Child Behaviour Checklist.
Results revealed that children from the supplemented group exhibited higher scores in eye and hand coordination compared to those from the unsupplemented group. The findings of this study indicate that maternal fish oil supplementation during pregnancy poses no adverse risks to the fetus or infant and yields favorable effects on the eye and hand coordination of the child. Consequently, many healthcare professionals recommend this supplement for pregnant women.
What is the evidence for Omega-3’s impact on bone health?
This supplement can lead to many benefits due to EPA and DHA. It can lubricate the joints and can improve the bone strength. It is beneficial in cases of arthritis and can improve mobility in patients with locomotory issues. Many studies prove the beneficial effects of this supplement.
The Effect of Omega-3 Fatty Acids in Patients With Active Rheumatoid Arthritis Receiving DMARDs Therapy: Double-Blind Randomized Controlled Trial
Rheumatoid arthritis is a form of symmetric peripheral polyarthritis whose cause is unknown. When left untreated or if therapy proves ineffective, it often results in joint deformity and damage due to the erosion of cartilage and bone. Studies have indicated that omega-3 fatty acids can lessen morning stiffness, as well as reduce the count of tender and swollen joints in individuals with rheumatoid arthritis. This study aims to assess the impact of omega-3 on disease activity and achieving remission in rheumatoid arthritis patients treated with Disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs). Additionally, it aims to investigate the effects of omega-3 on weight changes and the decrease in consumption of analgesic drugs compared to a placebo.
This study included 60 patients with active rheumatoid arthritis. It included 49 females and 11 males who had a rheumatologist examination, and disease activity scores were calculated. The supplementation lasted 12 weeks and was a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study. Patients were visited every 4 weeks, 4 times, and data was recorded. Patients taking omega-3 exhibited notable enhancements in both their overall assessment of their condition and in the physician's evaluation of the disease. A higher percentage of patients experienced improvement, and a greater proportion were able to decrease their use of additional pain-relieving medication with omega-3 supplementation. However, no changes in weight were observed.
The conclusion of the study is that daily supplementation with omega-3 provides significant clinical benefits and may lead to a decrease in the requirement for additional pain-relieving medication, all without affecting weight.
