Enrofloxacin Tablets are an antibiotic drug used to treat certain bacterial infections in small animals, such as poultry, birds, cats and dogs. This drug is commonly used to treat a range of bacterial infections, including those of the skin, urinary tract, and respiratory system, as well as infections that result from wounds.

Enrofloxacin belongs to the family of medicines called fluoroquinolone antibiotics. It works by inhibiting DNA and RNA synthesis. Enrofloxacin displays bactericidal activity against a wide range of gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria, including Staphylococcus, Escherichia coli, Pasteurella, Proteus, Campylobacter, and Klebsiella.

What is Enrofloxacin used for?

It's used to treat bacterial infections such as:

  • skin and soft tissue infections
  • urinary tract infections
  • Chlamydophila felis infections (in cats)
  • ulcerative colitis caused by Escherichia coli (in dogs)
  • gastrointestinal tract infections
  • mastitis
  • salmonellosis
  • respiratory infections, including enzootic pneumonia

What animals can be treated with Enrofloxacin Tablets?

This medicine is recommended for poultry, birds, cats and dogs.

How are Enrofloxacin Tablets used?

This medicine has been manufactured as a tablet, which is intended to be given orally to an animal.

How should Enrofloxacin Tablets be stored?

This medication should be stored in a dark, dry location below 25°C. Keep the tablets in the blister pack when not in use.

Dosage

How many Enrofloxacin Tablets should be given?

The usual dose is 2.5-5mg per kg of body weight, given once per day. The duration of treatment is 3 to 5 days.

For more complicated or severe infections, the dosage may be raised to 10-20mg per kg of body weight.

Side Effects

As with all pharmaceuticals, some unwanted effects can occur from the use of Enrofloxacin Tablets.

Common side effects include diarrhea or loose stools. On very rare occasions, an animal may experience a seizure, while younger animals may experience swollen joints or general lethargy. Allergy or hypersensitivity reactions have been recorded with the use of Enrofloxacin.

Precautions

Do NOT use Enrofloxacin Tablets for an animal that:

  • has a known allergy or hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients.
  • is intended for human consumption.
  • is a small or medium dog between 2 and 8 months of age.
  • is a foal, as they are highly susceptible to arthropathic side effects

Treatment with this drug should be administered with caution for an animal that:

  • is dehydrated.
  • has a seizure disorder.
  • has renal or hepatic impairment.

There are known interactions between Enrofloxacin and many other drugs, including other antibiotics, cyclosporine, flunixin, glyburide, zinc, iron, methotrexate, nitrofurantoin, phenytoin, probenecid, quinidine, and sucralfate.
