What is the Avian Pox (Fowl Pox) Vaccine?

Therapeutic Class:
Target Species:

Active Ingredients: Fowl Pox Virus

Avian Pox (Fowl Pox) Vaccine is used to vaccinate poultry against infections caused by the Avipoxvirus (APV). Once infected, the infection is slow-spreading within the animal and there are no treatment options. Avian pox infection slows growth, reduces feed conversion, and lowers egg production.

Though the mortality rate is low and lesions typically remain on the skin, the infection may lead to death if it spreads to air passages. Vaccination remains the best control and prevention against highly contagious pox. This vaccine is recommended for use in healthy chicks between the ages of 8-16 weeks old, and immunity develops about 10-14 days after the vaccination.

The Avian Pox Vaccine is a live viral vaccine, which is combined with a tissue suspension from an embryonated egg or similar avian cell culture. This particular vaccine is quail-adapted. A small amount of the virus will trigger the animal's immune system, which allows it to develop immunity against reinfection.

How is Avian Pox (Fowl Pox) Vaccine used?

This medicine is manufactured as a solution, which is intended to be diluted and then administered by wing web injection. Do not inject into any other part of the body besides the wing web. For young chicks without a blood vessel under the wing, a subcutaneous thorn inoculation may be necessary.

Dosage

It is typical to vaccinate chicks between the ages of 8-16 weeks old. It is normally administered via the wing web method.

The injection site should be examined 5-7 days after the vaccination. If swelling/scab/small lesion is evident, then the vaccination was successful. These side effects will subside after about 14 days. If there is no positive 'take', then it is possible the bird is already immune or the vaccination was not successful.

Refer to a veterinary doctor or pharmacist for guidelines on dosage.

Side Effects

  • is diseased or unhealthy.

Exposure to the virus should be avoided immediately after vaccination. Do not put newly vaccinated birds back into contaminated premises.

It is recommended that all susceptible chickens be vaccinated at the same time, or maintain isolation between unvaccinated and vaccinated chickens.

Reduce exposure to stress during the time of vaccination to encourage a healthy and successful take of the vaccine.

Avoid spilling or splattering the vaccine. It is best to burn any vials, accessories, or unused vaccine before disposing of them.
