What is Ciprofloxacin + Tinidazole?
Active Ingredients: Ciprofloxacin, Tinidazole
Ciprofloxacin + Tinidazole Soluble Powder is a combination drug used to treat infections in livestock animals. It is used for the treatment of colibacillosis, pullorum, fowl typhoid, staphylococcal infection, salmonella infections, infectious coryza, and secondary bacterial infections of viral outbreaks.
Ciprofloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic. It works by interfering with the enzymes responsible for DNA replication, which stops protein synthesis. Ciprofloxacin displays bactericidal activity against a broad spectrum of microorganisms, including Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella, E. coli, Enterobacter Salmonella, and Proteus.
Ciprofloxacin, a synthetic antimicrobial derived from Quinolone carboxylic acid, is used to control intestinal infections in production animals. Quinolones, like ciprofloxacin, have amphoteric properties and tend to have low water solubility in mildly acidic to neutral conditions (pH 6–8). These drugs act as weak bases and may be less effective in acidic urine compared to non acidic conditions. In concentrated acidic urine, some quinolones might form needle-shaped crystals. Usually, quinolones for oral or injection use come in easily dissolvable salts in stable water solutions.
Ciprofloxacin is usually given orally, with good bioavailability exceeding 80%. However, in cattle, its bioavailability can vary from 0% to 20%. Taking it with food may influence its effectiveness.
In terms of distribution in the body, ciprofloxacin easily penetrates all tissues due to its high-fat solubility, and its concentrations in tissues are consistently higher than in the blood. It's found in elimination organs like the kidneys, liver, and bile. Ciprofloxacin is also present in prostatic fluid, bone, ocular fluid, endometrium, and cerebrospinal fluid. The drug crosses the placenta to reach the developing fetus. Ciprofloxacin is mainly eliminated without much change or with partial breakdown, primarily through the kidneys via glomerular or tubular secretion. Even 24 hours after the last dose, concentrations in the urine remain high. The effectiveness of ciprofloxacin comes from its ability to inhibit DNA gyrase, preventing DNA supercoiling. It's important to note that the drug's effectiveness depends on its concentration, and a once-per-day treatment is typically sufficient.
Tinidazole is classified as a nitroimidazole antimicrobial. It works by damaging the DNA of susceptible microorganisms, including certain bacteria and parasites like giardiasis and amebiasis. This bactericidal antibiotic inhibits DNA synthesis in certain microorganisms. The half-life of tinidazole is long and allows less frequent dosing. It is used primarily for protozoan parasites and is not used for systemic anaerobic bacterial infections.
It is important to note that this drug is for veterinary purposes only. Ciprofloxacin + Tinidazole Soluble Powder should be prescribed by a veterinary doctor or animal care specialist for an animal.

What animals can be treated with Ciprofloxacin + Tinidazole Soluble Powder?
This medicine is recommended for poultry, cattle, and swine.
How is Ciprofloxacin + Tinidazole Soluble Powder used?
This medicine has been manufactured as a water-soluble powder. It can be mixed with drinking water and then administered to the animal.
How can Tinidazole Soluble Powder help animals?
Tinidazole is effective against many gastrointestinal, urogenital, and respiratory infections.
It can be used for treating peptic ulcers due to Helicobacter pylori in addition to other drugs. It is also recommended for treating pseudomembranous colitis caused by Clostridiodes, but only in mild cases. Tinidazole is helpful in treating intra-abdominal, pelvic, soft-tissue, periodontal, and odontogenic infections. It is also helpful in treating bacterial vaginosis. Dosing should be carefully determined since higher dosages of Tinidazole might reduce the food intake in animals.
Which diseases can be targeted by Ciprofloxacin in animals?
Ciprofloxacin in animals is effective against the following:
- sinusitis
- urinary tract infections
- meningitis
- septic arthritis
- pneumonia
- endocarditis
- intra abdominal abscess
- gastroenteritic
- empyema
- intracellular pathogens
- prostatitis
- skin and soft-tissue infections
- wound sepsis
Is Ciprofloxacin + Tinidazole Soluble Powder enough for treating secondary bacterial infections during viral outbreaks?
Viral infections cannot be treated with antibiotics. Many other drugs are recommended for addressing viral infections. Vitamins, supplements, immune-boosting supplements, and antiviral agents are recommended for cases of viral infections. However, low immunity in animals makes the organism susceptible to many bacteria and increases the chances of secondary infections. If the secondary infections are caused by a certain bacteria that is susceptible to ciprofloxacin or tinidazole, this product can help in managing the disease. For successful treatment, the bacteria should be properly determined and diagnosed, and antibiogram testing is recommended.
Can pregnant and lactating animals be treated with this antibiotic?
Embryonic loss, tissue damage, and maternal toxicity are common in treating pregnant animals with quinolones. On the other side, tinidazole should be avoided during pregnancy since it shows moderate risk. Breastfeeding should be deferred for 72 hours after oral administration of tinidazole.
Consult with a veterinarian before administering any antibiotic for treating bacterial or protozoan infections in pregnant or lactating animals. The veterinarian should outweigh the risks and benefits and determine whether the antibiotic is a good choice for the animals.
How should Ciprofloxacin + Tinidazole Soluble Powder be stored?
This medication should be stored in a dark, dry location under 30°C.
Is there a withdrawal period after treatment with Ciprofloxacin + Tinidazole?
The withdrawal time is 12-15 days.
Dosage
How much Ciprofloxacin + Tinidazole Soluble Powder should be given to cattle?
The usual dose is 50mg per kg of body weight.
Dosage should be administered with caution in animals with liver diseases. Tinidazole might inhibit the metabolism of warfarin and increase the anticoagulant effect.
Refer to a veterinary doctor or pharmacist for guidelines on dosage.

Precautions
Do NOT use Ciprofloxacin + Tinidazole Soluble Powder for an animal that:
- has a known allergy or hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients.
- has liver or kidney disease.
- is young or dehydrated.
Tinidazole should be avoided during pregnancy since it shows moderate risk. Breastfeeding should be deferred for 72 hours after oral administration of tinidazole.
Quinolones should be avoided during pregnancies because they can lead to embryonic loss, tissue damage, and maternal toxicity. There are known interactions between Ciprofloxacin and other drugs, including antacids, sucralfate, cyclosporine, iron/zinc, methotrexate, quinidine, and theophylline. This drug should not be used with dairy products because the efficacy will be reduced. If the animal has recently been treated with other antimicrobial drugs, it shows reduced efficacy.
The effectiveness of this drug in monogastric animals can be diminished by the presence of food. The bioavailability may also be reduced through chelation when administered concurrently with antacids containing magnesium and calcium. Lower doses are recommended for animals with kidney failure, as the primary elimination route for the drug is through urine.
