What is Oxacillin Sodium?

Oxacillin Sodium for Injection is an antibiotic used to treat various types of bacterial infections caused by penicillinase-producing staphylococci. It may be used to initiate therapy when a staphylococcal infection is suspected. It is indicated for the treatment of infections like pneumonia and meningitis.
Oxacillin is also used to treat infections associated with the urinary tract, skin, bone, joint, blood, and heart valve.
Oxacillin Sodium is a narrow-spectrum, beta-lactam antibiotic in the penicillin family. The active ingredient, Oxacillin Sodium, works by inhibiting the growth of the bacterial cell wall. It is effective against some gram-positive bacteria, such as resistant Staphylococcus aureus.

Uses
What is Oxacillin Sodium used for?
It is used to treat moderate to severe infections caused by penicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, such as:
- endocarditis
- meningitis
- pneumonia
- joint infections
- infections of the skin or soft tissue
- osteomyelitis
What dose should be taken?
The exact dosage is based on medical condition, response to the treatment, age, and weight:
- For mild or moderate infections, the usual dose for adults is 250-500mg IM/IV, given every 4-6 hours.
- For infants and children with a body weight less than 40kg, the usual dose is 50mg/kg IM/IV, divided and given every 6 hours.
- For severe infections, the usual dose for adults is 1g IM/IV, given every 4-6 hours
- For infants and children with a body weight less than 40kg, the usual dose is 100mg/kg IM/IV, divided and given every 6 hours.
- For neonates, the usual dose is 25mg/kg per day.

Side Effects
As with all pharmaceuticals, some unwanted effects can occur from the use of Oxacillin Sodium for Injection.
Common side effects include, but may not be limited to: • nausea or diarrhea • headache • rash • abdominal pain • signs of a fungal infection, such as vaginal itching • black or hairy tongue
