What is Cefuroxime?
Active Ingredients: Cefuroxime
Cefuroxime for Injection is an antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections. It is indicated for the treatment of infections like bronchitis, gonorrhea, and infection of the ear, throat, sinuses, urinary tract and skin. This medicine may be administered to adults and children, including neonates.
Cefuroxime belongs to the class of medicines called cephalosporin antibiotics. It works by stopping or slowing the growth of bacterial cell walls.
This formulation of Cefuroxime has been manufactured as a fine powder for reconstitution. It is available in four dosages (500mg, 750mg, 1g, or 1.5g), all of which can be produced as a combination package with Water for Injection. Each pack contains both a vial of Cefuroxime and an ampoule of sterile Water for Injection, which is intended to be mixed with the Cefuroxime and injected by the intravenous route.

What is Cefuroxime used for?
It is used to treat many types of bacterial infections, such as:
- community-acquired pneumonia
- acute exacerbation of chronic bronchitis
- complicated urinary tract infections
- pyelonephritis
- soft-tissue infections like cellulitis
- erysipelas
- wound infections
- intra-abdominal infections
This antibiotic is also used as prophylaxis against infection in certain surgeries.
How is Cefuroxime for Injection used?
This medication is manufactured as a powder, which is to be mixed into a solution. The reconstituted solution is intended to be injected intravenously or intramuscularly.
What dose should be given?
The exact dosage is based on the severity of the infections, age, gender and weight:
- The usual dose is 750mg three times daily by intramuscular or intravenous injection. To treat severe infection, the dose should be increased to 1.5g three times daily given intravenously.
- The usual dosage for infants and children is 30 to 100mg/kg per day given as 3 or 4 divided doses. A dose of 60mg/kg per is appropriate for most infections.
- The usual dosage for neonates is 30 to 100mg/kg per day given as 2 or 3 divided doses.

Side Effects
As with all pharmaceuticals, some unwanted effects can occur from the use of Cefuroxime for Injection.
Common side effects include, but may not be limited to:
- swelling, redness and pain at the injection site
- temporary rise in liver enzyme (bilirubin)
- unusual taste in the mouth
- diaper rash (in babies)
Serious side effects may occur. Seek medical attention if the following develop:
- signs of an allergic reaction
- signs of a liver problem
- signs of a new infection
- mental or mood changes
- jerky movements

Precautions
Do NOT use Cefuroxime for Injection if:
- You are allergic to any of the ingredients.
- You are undergoing concurrent treatment with potent diuretics or aminoglycosides.

- You have a positive Coombs Test associated with the use of Cefuroxime.
