What is Fortified Penicillin G Procaine used for?
It is used to treat moderately severe bacterial infections such as:
- syphilis
- respiratory tract infections when oral administration is difficult
- cellulitis
- erysipelas
- anthrax (as adjunct)
- strep throat (with Penicillin V and Erythromycin)
How is Fortified Penicillin G Procaine for Injection used?
This medication is manufactured as a powder, which is packaged in a vial. As an injectable form, it is to be given directly into a muscle (IM). Reconstituted solutions should be used immediately.
What dose should be given?
The usual dose for adults is 0.6 to 2.4mega units per day. For post-exposure anthrax prophylaxis, doses are given every 12 hours.
For children, the usual dose is 0.05mega units/kg, divided and given 1-2 times per day.
The exact dosage is based on the severity of the infections, age, gender and weight. Refer to a doctor or pharmacist for guidelines on dosage.
Side Effects
