How should Amoxicillin + Clavulanate for Injection be used?
This medication is manufactured as a powder that is packaged in a vial. As an injectable form, it is to be given directly into a vein or muscle by a healthcare professional.
What dose should be given?
Depending on the type of infection and its severity, the usual dose is as follows:
- Children 0-3 months: 30mg/kg every 12 hours in infants < 4kg, and 30mg/kg every 8 hours in infants > 4kg.
- Children 3 months-12 years: usually 30mg/kg 8-hourly.
- Adults and children 40kg and over: usually 1.2g 8-hourly.
For surgical prophylaxis, procedures in adults lasting for less than 1 hour, the usual dose is 1.2g amoxicillin IV. Longer operations require subsequent doses of 1.2g amoxicillin IV (up to 4 doses in 24 hours).
The exact dosage is based on the severity of the infection, age, and body weight. Refer to a doctor or pharmacist for guidelines on dosage.
Side Effects
