What is Spectinomycin HCl + Colistin Sulfate?
Active Ingredients: Spectinomycin HCl, Colistin Sulfate
Spectinomycin HCl + Colistin Sulfate Oral Solution is a combination antibiotic used to prevent gastrointestinal infections caused by susceptible bacteria, such as E. coli, Haemophilus, Mycoplasma and Salmonella. This medicine should be used for piglets, calves, or animals without an active rumen or intestinal flora.
The combination of these two antibiotics displays an additive effect against susceptible bacteria. Spectinomycin is classified in the aminocyclitol family of medicines. It works by inhibiting protein synthesis within the bacteria. Colistin is classified as a polymyxin, which works by breaking down the cell membrane of the bacteria. Colistin shows bactericidal activity against many gram-negative microorganisms, including Aerobacter aerogenes, Escherichia coli, Salmonella, Shigella, Haemophilus, and Pasteurella. Colistin is also known by the name polymyxin E.
