What is Ceftiofur?

Therapeutic Class:
Target Species:

Active Ingredients: Ceftiofur Sodium

Ceftiofur Sodium for Injection is an antibacterial drug used to treat certain infections in horses, livestock animals, and poultry such as day-old chickens or turkeys. It is indicated for the treatment of infections such as shipping fever, pneumonia, urinary tract infections, and bovine interdigital necrobacillosis.

Ceftiofur sodium is a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic, though some consider it a "new generation" cephalosporin. It works by inhibiting cell wall synthesis. It shows bactericidal action against a wide range of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, including Pasteurella, Streptococcus, Salmonella, and E. coli. In poultry, it is known to help combat systemic infections like Salmonellosis.

Ceftiofur Sodium for Injection should be prescribed by a veterinary doctor or animal care specialist for an animal. This product is not for human use.

Like any medication, ceftiofur sodium can have side effects, though they are typically rare and mild if used as prescribed. In horses and livestock, side effects might include swelling or discomfort at the injection site. Allergic reactions are possible, showing symptoms such as hives or breathing difficulties. If these occur, a vet should be contacted immediately.

Ceftiofur Sodium for Injection is produced by AdvaCare Pharma, a pharmaceutical company that specializes in global exportation. This medication is part of our comprehensive catalog of veterinary supplies which are available for distribution. Our manufacturing factories are located in China, India, and the USA.

Uses

What is Ceftiofur Sodium used for?

It's used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections such as:

  • bacterial pneumonia
  • respiratory tract infections in horses
  • interdigital necrobacillosis (foot rot, pododermatitis) in cattle
  • urinary tract infection in dogs
  • early mortality associated with E.coli in chicken and turkey poults

What is the mechanism of action of Ceftiofur Sodium for Injection?

Ceftiofur Sodium, as a cephalosporin antibiotic, acts by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to bacterial cell death. This disruption in cell wall synthesis weakens the bacterial cell, making it unable to maintain its structural integrity and eventually leading to cell lysis and the elimination of the infection.

What animals can be treated with Ceftiofur Sodium for Injection?

This medicine is recommended for horses, poultry, and livestock such as cattle and swine.

How is Ceftiofur Sodium for Injection used?

This drug has been manufactured as a powder for reconstitution. The solution is relatively unstable and should be administered to the patient within 1 hour of reconstitution. This medicine can be administered either by intravenous or intramuscular route.

Can anybody administer Ceftiofur Sodium for Injection?

It depends on the regulations for each country. In the USA, federal regulations mandate that this medication can only be administered or prescribed by a licensed veterinarian.

What are the withdrawal times for Ceftiofur Sodium for Injection?

For cattle, the withdrawal time is 3 days for slaughter. For milk, it is best to wait 72 hours after treatment. For swine, the withdrawal time is 4 days for slaughter.

Can Ceftiofur Sodium be used in conjunction with other medications?

Yes, it can be co-administered with other drugs, but interactions may occur. Consult with a veterinarian before combining it with other medications, particularly antibiotics or drugs metabolized in the liver.

Is there a resistance concern with prolonged use of Ceftiofur Sodium for Injection?

Yes, as with many antibiotics, prolonged or inappropriate use of this drug can lead to the development of antibiotic-resistant bacterial strains. The drug should be used only as prescribed by a professional.

What precautions should be taken when administering Ceftiofur Sodium to pregnant or lactating animals?

While it is generally considered safe for use in pregnant or lactating animals, it's best to consult a veterinarian before initiating treatment. It is not known whether the drug can affect fetal development, but its use should always be based on a risk-benefit analysis by a veterinary professional.

What should be done in case of an overdose?

In an overdose, the animal may experience symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, or exhibit neurological signs. Immediate veterinary attention is required. Supportive care should follow, including intravenous fluids and vital signs monitoring.

What is the shelf life of Ceftiofur Sodium for Injection?

The shelf life in its original, unopened packaging is typically two years from the date of manufacture. Once reconstituted, the solution's stability is significantly reduced, and it should be used within one hour.

How should Ceftiofur Sodium for Injection be stored?

This medication should be stored in a dark, dry location under 30°C. The reconstituted solution should be used within a specified timeframe to maintain efficacy and prevent contamination.

How should any unused or expired Ceftiofur Sodium solution be disposed of?

Ceftiofur Sodium solutions should not be disposed of in regular trash or poured down drains. Local environmental regulations and guidelines for pharmaceutical waste disposal should be followed.
