The effects of spirulina on allergic rhinitis
Patients with allergic rhinitis have a need for continuous medical therapy, which might lead to anxiety in them. There are many alternative drugs and supplements, and spirulina is one of them. This blue-green alga in the form of a supplement can modulate immune functions and is helpful for many diseases.
This is a double-blind, placebo-controlled study that evaluates the effectiveness and tolerability of spirulina supplements in patients with allergic rhinitis.
Between June 2006 and February 2007, a total of 150 individuals aged 19 to 49 years, all with a clinical history of allergic rhinitis and currently experiencing its symptoms, were recruited for this study. This timeframe was selected to avoid seasonal worsening of symptoms. Patients with significant concurrent medical conditions, including those requiring continuous or frequent medication such as hypertension or diabetes, severe nasal obstruction or injury, asthma, rhinitis medicamentosa, and acute or chronic sinusitis, were excluded from participation.
The results of the study show that spirulina consumption can improve the symptoms of nasal discharge, sneezing, nasal congestion, and itchiness. This was compared with the placebo group.
Out of the 150 allergic rhinitis patients initially enrolled in the study, 129 (86%) completed the six-month treatment period and maintained proper diaries. Among these, 85 patients received spirulina, while 44 received placebo tablets.
Comparing initial and final symptoms, spirulina consumption significantly improved nasal discharge, sneezing, nasal congestion, and itching compared to placebo (P < 0.001***). Analysis of weekly diary data confirmed the significant efficacy of spirulina over the placebo group.
