Zoledronic Acid for Injection is a drug used to treat osteoporosis in postmenopausal women, as it reduces the incidence of fractures. It is also used to treat hypercalcemia caused by some types of cancer and to treat bone damage caused by multiple myeloma or cancer that has spread through the body.

Note that Zoledronic Acid for Injection is not an anticancer chemotherapy drug, and it will not slow or stop the spread of cancer, however, can be used to treat bone disease in patients who have cancer.

Zoledronic Acid for Injection is in a group of medicines called bisphosphonates, which inhibits the release of calcium from bones.

Uses

What is Zoledronic Acid used for?

It is used to treat hypercalcemia as a side effect of chemotherapy treatment. Zoledronic Acid is also used to treat osteoporosis in postmenopausal women.

How should Zoledronic Acid for Injection be used?

This medication is manufactured as a powder and stored in a vial. The powder is to be prepared into a solution, and after reconstitution, it should be administered by injection into a vein.

What dose should be given?

For malignant hypercalcemia, the usual dose is 4mg IV. Secondary treatment may be given after 7 days, if necessary.

The injection might take 15 minutes to complete.

The usual dose for an adult is dependent on the disease and treatment plan. Refer to a doctor or pharmacist for guidelines on dosage. Do not exceed what they advise.

Side Effects

As with all pharmaceuticals, some unwanted effects can occur from the use of Zoledronic Acid for Injection.

Common side effects include, but may not be limited to:

  • cough
  • diarrhea
  • vision problems
  • headache
  • tiredness

Seek medical attention if the following develop:

  • urinating less than normal or not at all
  • mood changes
  • muscle spasms
  • fever
  • body aches
  • flu

Precautions

Do NOT use Zoledronic Acid for Injection if:

  • You have any kidney disease or take medicine that can be harmful to the kidney.
  • You are pregnant.
  • You are dehydrated.

There are known drug interactions that can be harmful to the kidneys. It is not recommended to combine Zoledronic Acid Powder with certain medications, including:

  • chemotherapy drugs
  • antiviral medications
  • pain or arthritis medicine
  • injected antibiotics
  • medicine to treat a bowel disorder or prevent organ transplant rejection

Consult with your doctor about any medications you are taking before beginning treatment with Zoledronic Acid for Injection.

The use of Zoledronic Acid Powder during pregnancy or breastfeeding is not recommended because it can harm the fetus or baby. Consult a doctor or healthcare professional before treatment with Zoledronic Acid.
