What is Nystatin?
Active Ingredients: Nystatin
Nystatin Oral Suspension is an antifungal drug used to treat and prevent fungal and yeast infections of the mouth, esophagus, vagina, and intestinal tract. It is sometimes used as prophylaxis in newborns whose mothers have vaginal candidiasis. Nystatin is effective against many infections caused by Candida species.
Nystatin is classified as a polyene antifungal. It works by by binding to sterols in the fungal cell membrane, causing membrane disruption, increased permeability, and subsequent leakage of cellular contents, ultimately leading to fungal cell death. This drug displays fungicidal and fungistatic properties against many types of yeast and fungi.
