What is Idarubicin HCl?

Idarubicin HCl Injection is an anticancer drug used to treat acute myeloid leukemia in adults. This medication is typically combined with other approved antileukemic drugs. Idarubicin HCl may also be prescribed as a second-line treatment for relapsed acute lymphoblastic leukemia.
Idarubicin HCl Injection belongs to the family of medicines called antitumor antibiotics. The active ingredient is an anthracycline antileukemic agent. It works by inserting itself into DNA and then preventing the DNA from unwinding, therefore slowing or stopping the growth of cancer cells.

Uses
What is Idarubicin Hydrochloride used for?
It is used to treat leukemia. Typically, it is combined with cytarabine as a first-line treatment for acute myeloid leukemia in adults. Idarubicin HCl (4-demethoxydaunorubicin) may also be used to treat relapsed acute lymphoblastic leukemia.
How should Idarubicin HCl Injection be used?
This medication is manufactured as a powder and stored in a vial. The powder is to be prepared into a solution, and after reconstitution, it should be administered by slow injection into a vein.
Caution should be used when preparing and administering the solution, and goggles, gloves, and protective gowns are recommended.
What dose should be given?
The usual dose for adults is 12mg/m² daily for 3 days by slow injection.
The exact dosage is dependent on the patient and treatment. Refer to a doctor or pharmacist for guidelines on dosage. Do not exceed what they advise.
Side Effects
As with all pharmaceuticals, some unwanted effects can occur from the use of Idarubicin HCl Injection.
Common side effects include, but may not be limited to:
- nausea

- mental status changes

Precautions
Do NOT use Idarubicin HCl Injection if: • You have pre-existing bone marrow suppression induced by previous drug therapy or radiotherapy.

There is little evidence with regards to the use of Idarubicin during pregnancy or breastfeeding, so consult a doctor or healthcare professional before having Idarubicin HCl Injection.
