Cisplatin Injection is an antineoplastic drug used in cancer chemotherapy. It can be used alone or with other medications to treat some cancers that have not improved or have worsened after treatment. Cisplatin is also indicated for various types of carcinomas, sarcomas, lymphomas, and germ cell tumors.

Cisplatin is an alkylating agent that belongs to a medicine group known as platinum-containing compounds. It works by slowing down or stopping the growth of cancer cells in the body.

What is Cisplatin used for?

It is used to treat many types of cancer. Cisplatin can be used as a monotherapy or a combination therapy for the treatment of:

  • advanced bladder cancer
  • metastatic ovarian cancer
  • metastatic testicular cancer
  • stomach cancer
  • esophagus cancer
  • small cell lung cancer
  • sarcomas
  • lymphomas
  • germ cell tumors

How should Cisplatin Injection be used?

This medication is manufactured as a powder and stored in a vial.

The powder is to be prepared into a solution, and after reconstitution, it should be administered by injection.

As Cisplatin Injection is a cytotoxic drug, caution should be used when preparing and administering the solution. Goggles, gloves, and protective gowns are recommended.

What dose should be used?

Recommended dosage guidelines may vary depending on medical condition:

  • For advanced testicular cancer, the usual dose is 20mg/m² IV, given on days 1-5 of a 21-day cycle.
  • For advanced ovarian cancer, the usual dose is 70-100mg/m² IV, given on day 1 of a 21- or 28-day cycle.
  • For advanced bladder cancer, the usual dose is 50-70mg/m² IV, given on day 1 of a 21- or 28-day cycle.

The usual dose for adults is dependent on the type of cancer and treatment plan. Refer to a doctor or pharmacist for guidelines on dosage. Do not exceed what they advise.

Side Effects

As with all pharmaceuticals, some unwanted side effects can occur from treatment with Cisplatin Injection.

Common side effects include, but may not be limited to:

Seek medical attention if the following develop:

  • convulsions
  • loss of reflexes or tastes

Precautions

Do NOT use Cisplatin Injection if:

  • You have pre-existing renal impairment.
  • You have a hearing impairment.
  • You have a history of allergic reactions to Cisplatin or other platinum-containing compounds.

Cisplatin may decrease levels of lithium and phenytoin. Consult with your doctor about any medications you are taking before beginning treatment with Cisplatin.

The use of Cisplatin during pregnancy or breastfeeding is not recommended. Consult a doctor or healthcare professional before having Injections using Cisplatin Powder.
