What is Chloroquine Phosphate?

Chloroquine Phosphate Syrup is an antimalarial used for the prevention and treatment of uncomplicated malaria caused by P. falciparum, P. ovale, Chloroquine-susceptible P. vivax, or Plasmodium malariae. It can be used to treat some autoimmune disorders and liver infections caused by protozoa.
The active ingredient, Chloroquine, is a 4-aminoquinoline. Chloroquine works by attacking the asexual form of the parasite responsible for malaria.

Uses
What is Chloroquine Phosphate used for?
It is used to prevent and treat malaria caused by P. vivax, P. malariae, and some strains of P. falciparum. As it can mildly suppress the immune system, it is also used to treat some autoimmune disorders.
How is Chloroquine Phosphate Syrup used?
The syrup is manufactured as as a liquid to be taken orally.
What dose should be given?
For the prevention of malaria, the usual dose for children under 18 is 8.3mg/kg given once a week. The maximum dosage is 500mg. Treatment should begin 2 weeks before traveling and continue for 4 weeks after return.
For uncomplicated malaria in children, the typical initial dose is 16.7mg per kilogram of body weight. This dose should be repeated at 6, 24, and 48 hours after the initial dose.

Side Effects
As with all pharmaceuticals, some unwanted effects can occur from the use of Chloroquine Phosphate Syrup.
Seek medical attention if the following symptoms develop:
- black or tarry stools
- bleeding gums
- peeling or loosening of the skin
- blurred vision
- chest pain
- confusion
- dizziness
- fever
- fast heartbeat

Precautions
Do NOT use Chloroquine Phosphate Syrup if:
- You are allergic to Chloroquine Phosphate, or any of the other ingredients in the syrup.
- You are pregnant or are trying to get pregnant.
- You have a rare hereditary problem of galactose intolerance, the Lapp lactase deficiency, or glucose-galactose malabsorption.
- You are currently taking amiodarone for the treatment of irregular heartbeats.
- You have porphyria, kidney disorders, or liver disorders, particularly cirrhosis.
- You suffer from psoriasis.
- You suffer from convulsions or other nervous disorders.
- You suffer from gastrointestinal disorders.
Before treatment, consult your doctor regarding any medications you are taking to address potential drug interactions.
