What is Cetirizine HCl?

Therapeutic Class:

Active Ingredients: Cetirizine HCl

Cetirizine HCl Syrup is an antihistamine used to relieve cold or allergy symptoms like sneezing, itching, watery eyes, and runny nose. This drug is safe to use for adults and children over 1-year-old. Cetirizine HCl is considered to be less likely to cause drowsiness than other antihistamines.

Cetirizine HCl is a second-generation antihistamine. It works by blocking the release of histamine, which is responsible for many allergy-related symptoms.

Cetirizine HCl Syrup's effectiveness in treating allergy symptoms stems from its ability to selectively inhibit peripheral histamine H1 receptors. Unlike first-generation antihistamines, it crosses the blood-brain barrier to a lesser extent, reducing the likelihood of central nervous system side effects such as drowsiness. This characteristic makes it a favorable choice for individuals who need to maintain alertness and cognitive function while managing their allergy symptoms.

While Cetirizine HCl is less sedating than older antihistamines, some patients may still experience mild drowsiness. Caution is advised when using it in activities requiring mental alertness until the individual's response to the drug is known. Users should be aware of how they react to the drug before engaging in related activities.

After oral administration, it is rapidly absorbed, with peak plasma concentrations typically reached within an hour, contributing to its quick onset of action. The half-life of Cetirizine is approximately 8 hours, allowing for once or twice daily dosing in most cases. Its metabolism is limited, with a majority of the drug excreted unchanged in urine, which is an important consideration for patients with renal impairment. In such cases, dose adjustments may be necessary.

The syrup form of Cetirizine HCl is particularly useful for children and individuals who have difficulty swallowing pills, offering a convenient and easily adjustable dosing method.

What dose should be taken?

For adults and children over 6 years old, the usual dose is 10mg daily.

For children from 2-5 years old, the usual dose is 2.5mg (0.5ml), given once daily. The dose may be increased to 5mg per day.

Refer to a doctor or pharmacist for guidelines on dosage.

Can Cetirizine HCl Syrup cause drowsiness?

While it is a second-generation antihistamine and less likely to cause drowsiness than first-generation antihistamines, some individuals may still experience mild sedation with Cetirizine HCl. Caution is advised when performing tasks that require alertness until the individual's response to the drug is known.

How quickly does Cetirizine HCl Syrup begin to work?

Cetirizine HCl Syrup typically starts to relieve allergy symptoms within an hour of ingestion. Its peak effect usually occurs within one to two hours after administration.

Can Cetirizine HCl Syrup be taken with food?

It can be taken with or without food. Taking it with food may help reduce gastrointestinal side effects, if any, such as nausea.

Can Cetirizine HCl Syrup be used to treat skin allergies?

Yes, it is effective in treating symptoms of skin allergies, such as urticaria (hives), including itching and rash. It helps by reducing the histamine reaction that causes these symptoms.

Is Cetirizine HCl Syrup effective in treating allergic rhinitis?

Cetirizine is highly effective in treating symptoms of allergic rhinitis, including nasal congestion, sneezing, and itchy, watery eyes. It targets the histamine receptors responsible for these allergic responses.

Can Cetirizine HCl Syrup be used for insect bite reactions?

Yes, it can be effective in treating the itching and swelling associated with insect bites. It works by blocking the action of histamine, which is released as part of the body's reaction to an insect bite.

Can Cetirizine HCl Syrup be used to manage chronic urticaria?

It is effective in managing chronic urticaria (long-term hives), providing relief from itching and reducing the appearance of hives. Patients with this condition must consult a physician for a more comprehensive treatment plan.

Is Cetirizine HCl Syrup safe for individuals with kidney problems?

In patients with renal impairment, the excretion of Cetirizine may be reduced, necessitating dose adjustments. Consult a doctor before medicating.

Can Cetirizine HCl Syrup be used in individuals with liver disease?

As with renal impairment, patients with liver disease may require dosage adjustments. The liver's ability to metabolize the drug may be compromised in such conditions, potentially leading to increased drug levels and heightened risk of side effects.

Can individuals with a history of heart conditions use Cetirizine HCl Syrup?

Cetirizine HCl Syrup does not typically affect the heart rate or blood pressure significantly. Patients with a history of heart conditions should consult their healthcare provider before starting this medication.

Is Cetirizine HCl Syrup suitable for elderly patients?

Elderly patients can use it, but they may be more sensitive to its effects, particularly the potential for drowsiness. Also consider renal function, as this can be decreased in older adults.

Is Cetirizine HCl Syrup suitable for use during pregnancy?

Its safety during pregnancy has not been fully established. Pregnant women should use this medication only if clearly needed and after consulting with their doctor.

Can breastfeeding mothers take Cetirizine HCl Syrup?

Cetirizine is excreted in human breast milk. Breastfeeding mothers should be cautious and consult their doctor before using this medication to understand the potential risks to the nursing infant.

Are there any known drug interactions with Cetirizine HCl Syrup?

Cetirizine can interact with other medications that cause drowsiness, such as sedatives, muscle relaxants, and other antihistamines. Let the doctor know if other drugs are being taken before treating with this medication.

Can Cetirizine HCl Syrup be used for long-term allergy management?

Yes, it can, but it is important to regularly review this treatment with a doctor, particularly if symptoms persist or worsen.

Should Cetirizine HCl Syrup be taken at a specific time of day?

Yes, it can be taken at any time of the day, but if drowsiness is a side effect, it may be preferable to take it in the evening. Consistency in the time of day it is taken helps maintain an even level of the medication in the body.

Is it safe to consume alcohol while taking Cetirizine HCl Syrup?

Combining alcohol with Cetirizine HCl can enhance the sedative effects of both substances. This can lead to increased drowsiness, dizziness, and potentially impaired coordination or judgment. Avoid or limit alcohol while using this drug.

What should be done in case of a Cetirizine overdose?

An overdose can lead to severe drowsiness, confusion, or difficulty urinating. If such happens, immediate medical attention is necessary.

Is it possible to develop a tolerance to Cetirizine HCl Syrup with long-term use?

Tolerance is generally uncommon. Unlike some first-generation antihistamines, second-generation antihistamines like Cetirizine are less likely to lose their effectiveness with prolonged use.

How should Cetirizine HCl Syrup be stored?

The syrup should be stored at room temperature, away from direct light and moisture. The bottle should be tightly closed when not in use to maintain the quality of the medication.

The Health-Related Quality of Life Effects of Once-Daily Cetirizine HCl Syrup in Children with Seasonal Allergic Rhinitis

This study aimed to evaluate the impact of cetirizine HCl syrup on the health-related quality of life (HRQL) of children aged 6 to 11 years suffering from seasonal allergic rhinitis (SAR), while also assessing its effectiveness and safety.

This is an open-label, non-comparative trial, that involved 544 children across 124 centers in the United States. Participants were instructed to take 10cc of 1mg/mL cetirizine HCl syrup each evening for a duration of 4 weeks.

The results revealed significant improvements in HRQL among children, and also reductions in mean symptom scores (p < 0.001) throughout the treatment period. These positive outcomes were consistent across different age groups (6-7, 8-9, 10-11 years).

The conclusion of this study is that relief from symptoms and the well-tolerated nature of daily cetirizine HCl syrup intake can contribute to improved HRQL in children with SAR.
