What is Levamisole HCl?

Therapeutic Class:
Target Species:

Active Ingredients: Levamisole HCl

Levamisole HCl Boluses are an antiparasitic and immune stimulant that is used to treat many kinds of nematodes in cows and sheep. This drug is a highly effective flukicide and nematicide. It is important to note that Levamisole Boluses are intended for veterinary purposes only.

Levamisole Hydrochloride is an imidazothiazole that belongs to the class of medicines called anthelmintics. It works as a nicotinic acetylcholine receptor agonist. This action causes the continued stimulation of the parasitic worm muscles, leading to paralysis.

Levamisole, categorized as an anthelmintic, operates by inhibiting the neuromuscular transmission of stimuli in susceptible nematodes. Upon administration, it promptly induces neuromuscular paralysis in the parasite, leading to expulsion by the host within 24 hours.

This medication targets the nervous system of roundworms and lacks ovicidal properties. Its broad effectiveness against various parasites, water solubility facilitating easy administration, reasonable safety margin, and absence of teratogenic effects have contributed to its successful application. The significance of peak blood concentration for its antiparasitic efficacy surpasses the duration of concentration, given its mode of action. Resistance to Levamisole is associated with diminished cholinergic receptors.

Moreover, at higher dosages than those typically used for anthelmintic purposes, Levamisole exhibits immunostimulant effects. Its usage extends to humans and, to a limited extent, other animals for diverse diseases.

This drug is also available in the form of granule, injection, and soluble powder.

It is important to note that Levamisole HCl Boluses are for veterinary purposes only.

Uses

What is Levamisole used for?

It's used to treat parasitic infections caused by gastrointestinal, pulmonary, and other roundworms. It is indicated for the following worms:

  • Haemonchus spp.
  • Trichostrongylus spp.
  • Ostertagia spp.
  • Cooperia spp.
  • Nematodirus spp.
  • Bunostomum spp.
  • Oesophagostomum spp.
  • Chabertia spp.
  • Dictyocaulus viviparus

What animals can be treated with Levamisole Boluses?

It's recommended for livestock animals like cows and sheep. Do not use this drug for horses.

How should Levamisole Boluses be stored?

They should be stored in a dark, dry location below 25°C. Keep the boluses in the blister packs until usage.

Can this drug be used in pregnant and lactating animals?

Adding any drug to pregnant or lactating animals should be done with caution. Animal studies have revealed evidence of embryotoxicity of Levamisole. This drug should only be given during pregnancy when the benefit outweighs the risk.

How can Levamisole HCl Bolus help in cases of gastrointestinal nematodes?

The neuromuscular paralysis induced by the drug proves beneficial in alleviating the manifestations of gastrointestinal nematode infestation. Additionally, the medication enhances the permeability of the cuticle, the outer covering of nematodes, rendering them more susceptible to the host's immune response and unfavorable conditions within the gastrointestinal tract. Notably, the drug maintains effectiveness even against nematodes that have developed resistance.

The drug's oral administration capability contributes to its high efficiency. Furthermore, it exhibits an immunostimulant effect in animals. Successful treatment results in the restoration of normal appetite and weight gain in the treated animal. It also alleviates symptoms of dehydration, lethargy, and weakness. Treated animals regain their normal pink gum coloration and can prevent themselves from anemia.

Levamisole has been proven effective in the treatment of gastrointestinal nematodes.

How can Levamisole HCl Boluses help in the treatment process of lungworms?

Among ruminants, lungworm infection with Dictyocaulus spp is economically significant, particularly in cattle, where D. viviparus infection prevails in regions with temperate climates featuring high rainfall or intense irrigation. This type of infection leads to severe outbreaks of parasitic bronchitis, imposing substantial economic consequences.

In sheep, lungworm infection caused by D. filaria is comparatively less pathogenic but still results in losses. The addition of Levamisole to these animals proves beneficial in alleviating symptoms such as coughing, dyspnea, depression, and loss of condition.

Is this drug only enough for treating lungworm infections in animals?

The selection of treatment depends on the current health status of the animal and the veterinarian's preference. In certain cases, this drug alone suffices for a successful treatment leading to full recovery. However, for lungworm infections, recommendations often include vaccination or the use of anthelmintics. In specific regions, anthelmintic prophylaxis is advised as a preventive measure to curb the occurrence of diseases.

How can Levamisole HCl Bolus help in the treatment process of Haemonchus?

Levamisole can help animals return to their normal gum color and can regulate anemia since this parasite feeds on blood. Animals can get their normal body condition if the treatment process is successful. Treated animals do not experience symptoms of weakness and lethargy. Cattle and sheep can return to their normal appetite and prevent weight loss and poor body condition. Swelling in the jaws can be reduced. Gastrointestinal symptoms like vomiting and diarrhea can be decreased when this antiparasitic drug is added.

Is Levamisole HCl Bolus appropriate for other animal species?

This drug is mostly used in cattle and sheep and can be used for dogs and cats as well. It is not commonly used in dogs and cats, and the drug choice should be based on the animal’s current health condition and the veterinarian’s choice. This drug can be used for the control of hookworm and toxocara in dogs. This drug can also be effective in cases of Dirofilaria immitis. If the veterinarians decide on Levamisole, proper dosing is crucial because overdosing can lead to vomiting, bradycardia, tachypnea, excitement, or depression. Also, ECG abnormalities like ventricular fibrillation and ventricular and atrial complexes are common in cases of Levamisole administration.

Is there a withdrawal period after treatment with Levamisole?

The withdrawal time is 28 days for meat and 10 days for milk. Each country has different withdrawal periods. Check the country’s regulations before administering this drug.

Dosage

How much Levamisole HCl should be given to livestock?

The usual dose is 1 bolus per 41-75kg of body weight.

Refer to a veterinary doctor or pharmacist for guidelines on dosage.

Side Effects

When administered at the recommended dosage guidelines, Levamisole HCl Boluses cause few side effects.

At higher doses, some common side effects include:

  • head shaking
  • excessive salivation or sweating
  • coughing
  • gastrointestinal effects such as vomiting, changes in stool consistency, or loss of appetite
  • minor muscle spasms
  • colic

Serious side effects may include allergy or hypersensitivity reactions.

Accidental or intentional overdosing carries the risk of toxicity and adverse reactions. Excessive dosage may induce neurotoxic effects not only in the targeted parasites but also in the host animal. This can manifest as tremors, lack of coordination, or hyperexcitability in the affected animal.

Observe the animal after administering this drug. Most of the adverse side effects occur within 2 hours after application. Parasympathetic symptoms like foam or salivation are common in cattle. Other serious side effects include excitement, trembling, licking, or shaking the head. Vomiting and diarrhea are the most common gastrointestinal side effects in animals. If you notice any of these side effects, contact a veterinarian as soon as possible.

Too frequent and repeated use of anthelmintics from the same class can lead to resistance.

For a comprehensive list of all possible side effects of this medication, consult a veterinarian.

Precautions

Do NOT use Levamisole HCl Boluses in animals that:

  • have a known allergy or hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients.
  • have impaired liver function.
  • are producing milk for human consumption.

After administering this drug, proper hygiene measures must be taken. Reinfections can occur very easily, and animals must be accommodated in clean environments. Reinfections can occur due to unclean pastures and housings. Proper disinfectants should be used on farms to avoid further infections.

Infected animals should be separated from the healthy animals. All-in, all-out animals should be in practice on farms that have problems with parasitic infections.

Although this drug is an immune stimulant, other supplements and vitamins are recommended during the treatment process.

There are known interactions between Levamisole and other drugs, including pyrantel, morantel, and organophosphates.

Keep the product away from children and animals.

What are the most common animals for which Levamisole HCl Boluses are used?

Levamisole HCl Boluses is primarily used against nematode infections in cows and sheep. This drug is highly effective against flukes.
