What is the evidence for Diabetes tablet's impact on people with diabetes mellitus regarding chromium picolinate?
There are many studies that suggest that taking chromium supplements can improve the blood sugar control in people with diabetes. It can also lower the insulin sensitivity. These supplements can be effective at improving the body’s response to insulin or lowering blood sugar levels.
Role of chromium supplementation in Indians with type 2 diabetes mellitus
Diabetes type 2 is a complex metabolic disorder that leads to adverse cardiovascular consequences. The objective of this study was to evaluate the chromium status in the Indian population that has diabetes mellitus type 2. It was also focused on evaluating the effects of chromium picolinate administration on glycaemic control and lipids in affected patients. This research was also evaluating the beneficial effect of this supplementation.
This is a double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover research in which 50 patients were included and received chromium or placebo supplementation that lasted 12 weeks.
Initial results showed that serum chromium levels were higher in the general population in Western countries than in India(36.5–59.5nmol/L as compared to 2.3–40.3nmol/L).
In India, diabetic people had lower serum chromium levels than healthy people(32.3nmol/L against 44.7nmol/L; p < 0.0001).
This study showed an improvement in the glycaemic control in the chromium-treated group when compared to the placebo group. Also, the fasting serum insulin decreased in treated patients. There was not a significant change in the lipid parameters, including total serum cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and triglycerides.
The conclusion of this study is that chromium supplementation can improve glycaemic control in diabetes type 2 patients due to an increase in insulin action.
Beneficial effects of oral chromium picolinate supplementation on glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes: A randomized clinical study
Chromium is an essential mineral that can lead to normal glucose levels and lipid metabolism. The objective of this research was to evaluate the effect of chromium picolinate (CrPic) in patients with diabetes mellitus type 2.
This is a controlled, single-blind, randomized trial that lasted four months and included 71 patients with poorly controlled diabetes. The patients were divided into two groups. One of the groups was supplemented and included 32 patients who received 600μg/day CrPic, and the other group was control that included 39 patients who received a placebo.
These patients also received nutritional guidance according to the American Diabetes Association (ADA) and also used the prescribed medications. The study evaluated fasting and postprandial glucose, HbA1c, total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, triglycerides, and serum ferritin.
The results showed that CrPic supplementation can reduce the fasting glucose concentrations and postprandial glucose concentrations. Also, the results showed that supplemented patients had increased serum chromium concentrations when compared to the supplemented group. There was no significant difference in the lipid profile. However, some parameters were lowered, including total cholesterol, HDL-c, and LDL-c; this was compared to the pre- and post-treatment periods.
The conclusion of the study is that chromium picolinate supplementation has a positive effect on glycemic control in patients with poorly controlled type 2 diabetes.
