Theophylline Tablets are a drug used in the treatment of respiratory diseases, such as asthma, chronic bronchitis, and emphysema. When used regularly, this medication prevents wheezing, shortness of breath, and difficulty breathing. It is not effective against sudden attacks of bronchospasm.

Theophylline is in the group of medicines called xanthines. It is a bronchodilator that works by relaxing and opening the bronchial tubes in the lungs, which makes it easier to breathe.

What is Theophylline used for?

It is used to manage and control symptoms associated with lung diseases, such as asthma, chronic bronchitis, and emphysema.

How are Theophylline Tablets used?

This medication is intended to be taken orally.

What dose should be taken?

For adults and children weighing more than 45kg, the usual dose is 300mg, divided and given every 6-8 hours. The dose may be adjusted, but the maximum dosage is 600mg per day.

The dosage is based on medical condition, response to treatment, age, and weight. Refer to a doctor or pharmacist for guidelines on dosage. Do not exceed what they advise.

Side Effects

As with all pharmaceuticals, some unwanted effects can occur from the use of Theophylline Tablets.

Common side effects include, but may not be limited to:

  • nausea or vomiting
  • stomach pain
  • headache
  • trouble sleeping
  • diarrhea
  • restlessness
  • shaking
  • increased urination

Call a doctor if these symptoms appear:

  • persistent nausea or vomiting
  • fast, slow, or irregular heartbeat
  • muscle cramps
  • fainting
  • confusion or dizziness

Seek immediate medical attention if the following develop:

  • seizures
  • signs of an allergic reaction

Children and the elderly may be more susceptible to side effects.

Precautions

Do NOT use Theophylline Tablets if:

  • You are allergic to Theophylline or any of the ingredients.
  • You are allergic to xanthine or caffeine.
  • You are using large amounts of other products that contain xanthine, such as chocolate or caffeinated drinks.
  • You are taking dipyridamole intravenously (IV).
  • You are taking febuxostat, halothane or St. John's wort.
  • You are taking aminophylline or oxtriphylline.

Theophylline may not be suitable for people with certain conditions, so it is important to consult with a doctor if:

  • You are a smoker or have recently quit smoking.
  • You have a high protein/low carbohydrate or high carbohydrate/low protein diet.
  • You have ulcers.
  • You have a history of seizures.
  • You have thyroid disease, heart problems, liver disease or hypertension.
  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Before treatment, consult your doctor regarding any medications you are taking to address potential drug interactions.
