Salbutamol Tablets are used to treat and prevent wheezing, difficulty breathing, chest tightness, and other symptoms associated with lung diseases such as asthma, bronchitis, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). This medication is not effective against sudden attacks of bronchospasm.

The oral tablet form of salbutamol is sometimes used for patients who are unable to use inhalation forms of this drug, such as children or those with poor hand-eye coordination.

The tablets take about 30 minutes to work, while the inhalation form typically works within a few minutes.

What dose should be taken?

Recommended dosage may vary based on different medical conditions and age.

Adult Dosing For bronchospasm associated with reversible obstructive airway diseases, the usual dose is 2-8mg taken 3-4 times each day. The starting dose should be 2-4mg taken 3 times each day. If the patient does not have adequate bronchodilation, then the dosage can be increased to 4 times per day. The dose can be increased cautiously if there is still not enough response. The maximum dosage is 8mg per dose or 32mg per day.

Renal Dosing There is no adjustment necessary for patients with renal impairment, but it is advised to use caution during high-dose therapy. No adjustments or supplements are necessary for patients on HD/PD.

Hepatic Dosing Guidelines recommendations have not been defined for patients with hepatic impairment.

What should happen if a dose is missed?

This drug may interfere with uterine contractility, so its use during labor and delivery should only be used if there is a clear need.

Breastfeeding This drug should only be used if the benefits outweigh the risks. It is unknown whether Salbutamol passes in milk. There is no human data available to evaluate potential risk for the infant. Due to the properties of the drug, there is a possible risk of tremors and agitation. Human data is not available to assess this drug’s effects on milk production.

Children Salbutamol Tablets can be used to treat bronchospasm in pediatric patients over 6 years old. This form of Salbutamol may not be the most appropriate if children are unable to swallow tablets. It is important to note that 1mg/kg is a potentially toxic dose for children younger than 6 years old.

Geriatric Elderly patients are at an increased risk of side effects, such as low potassium levels or cardiovascular effects. It is advised to use an initial dose of 2-3mg.

How should Salbutamol Tablets be stored?

It is recommended to keep this medication in its original packaging until use. The tablet should be stored at room temperature and protected from direct light, moisture, or heat.

Other warnings

This drug should be used cautiously for patients with cardiovascular disease, glaucoma, hyperthyroidism, or seizures. It should also be used with caution in patients with diabetes or hypokalemia.

Salbutamol may worsen heart failure in patients with reduced ejection fraction.

The use of this drug may lead to severe hypokalemia or changes in blood glucose levels.

Before treatment, consult your doctor regarding any medications you are taking to address potential drug interactions.Salbutamol is known to have possible interactions with drugs such as corticosteroids, diuretics, MAO inhibitors (e.g. isocarboxazid, linezolid, methylene blue injection, phenelzine, rasagiline, selegiline, or tranylcypromine), tricyclic antidepressants (e.g. amitriptyline, doxepin, imipramine, or nortriptyline), beta-blockers (e.g. atenolol, carvedilol, metoprolol, or propranolol), and digoxin. Salbutamol Tablets are not a rescue medication and should not be used to immediately treat a bronchospasm attack. It is advised to use a fast-acting inhalation medicine for this situation.

It is recommended to avoid the use of decongestants (e.g. phenylephrine or pseudoephedrine) or diet pills while being treated with salbutamol.

Bronchodilator Effect of Oral Salbutamol in Asthmatics Treated with Corticosteroids

This is a double-blind trial that focuses on the impact of oral salbutamol at two different doses and a placebo on ventilatory function. It was investigated in 12 patients diagnosed with chronic asthma who were already receiving regular maintenance treatment with prednisolone.

Over a four-week period, salbutamol administered at a dose of 4mg four times daily demonstrated a sustained and statistically significant improvement in peak expiratory flow rate compared to baseline measurements.

No significant effect was observed with a lower dose of salbutamol (2mg four times daily) or with the placebo.

The conclusion is that a higher dose of salbutamol appeared to be both effective and safe as an oral bronchodilator for the treatment of mild to moderate asthma.
