Piroxicam Capsules are a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used to treat pain, swelling, and inflammation. This medication is used to relieve symptoms that are associated with various conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, primary dysmenorrhea, ankylosing spondylitis, or postoperative pain.

Piroxicam belongs to the oxicam class of the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug family. It possesses anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antipyretic properties. The active ingredient works by interfering with the production of cyclooxygenase.

Uses

What is Piroxicam used for?

It is used to reduce pain, inflammation, and swelling associated with various conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, primary dysmenorrhea, ankylosing spondylitis, or postoperative pain.

How should Piroxicam Capsules be taken?

This medication is manufactured to be taken orally. Piroxicam Capsules taken with food may cause a small delay in effect, administration between meals is therefore advised.

What dose should be taken?

The maximum daily dose is 20mg of piroxicam taken as a single daily dose.

Its use in children is not recommended.

The dosage is based on medical condition, response to the treatment, age, and weight.

Side Effects

As with all pharmaceuticals, some unwanted effects can occur from the use of Piroxicam Capsules.

Common side effects include, but may not be limited to:

  • upset stomach
  • headache
  • diarrhea
  • constipation
  • dizziness

Seek medical attention if the following develop:

  • serious skin reactions (such as blisters, rash, peeling, bruising)
  • fever
  • swelling in the face or throat
  • hearing changes (such as ringing in the ears)
  • anemia
  • kidney, liver, or stomach problems
  • sudden weight gain
  • shortness of breath
  • vision changes

Call a doctor immediately if there are signs of a heart attack or stroke, such as:

  • chest pain that spreads suddenly throughout the shoulder or jaw
  • sudden weakness on a side of the body
  • shortness of breath
  • slurred speech

Precautions

Do NOT take Piroxicam Capsules if:

  • You are allergic to aspirin or other NSAIDs.
  • You have asthma.
  • You have heart problems or have recently had heart bypass surgery.
  • You have stomach or intestinal problems.
  • You are breastfeeding or trying to get pregnant.

There are many known drug interactions between Piroxicam and other medications, such as certain steroids, heart or blood pressure medications, blood thinners, methotrexate, or lithium. Consult with a doctor about all of your current medications before beginning treatment.

Driving or operating machinery should be avoided, as Piroxicam may cause dizziness. Avoid drinking alcohol while taking Piroxicam, since it can increase the risk of stomach bleeding.
