Phenytoin Sodium Tablets are used to prevent and control some types of seizures, such as tonic-clonic (grand mal) and psychomotor (temporal lobe) seizures. This medication is also used in the treatment of arrhythmia (abnormal heart rhythm), digoxin toxicity, and neuropathic pain (nerve pain).

Phenytoin sodium is classified as an anticonvulsant. The active ingredient is thought to protect against seizures by blocking voltage-gated sodium channels.

What is Phenytoin Sodium used for?

It is used to prevent and control tonic-clonic and focal seizures. It is sometimes used in combination with other anticonvulsants to treat combined absence and tonic-clonic seizures.

Phenytoin Sodium is also used in the treatment of heart arrhythmia and trigeminal neuralgia.

How are Phenytoin Sodium Tablets used?

This medication is intended to be taken orally. Phenytoin Sodium Tablets should be taken with a glass of water. It may be taken with food to prevent an upset stomach.

What dose should be taken?

For seizures, the usual loading dose for inpatients is 1g, divided into 3 doses, given every 2 hours. For maintenance, the usual dose is 100mg, taken 3-4 times a day.

The dosage is based on medical condition, response to treatment, age, and weight. Refer to a doctor or pharmacist for guidelines on dosage. Do not exceed what they advise.

Side Effects

As with all pharmaceuticals, some unwanted effects can occur from the use of Phenytoin Sodium Tablets.

Phenytoin Sodium may cause the gums to swell and bleed, so it is important to brush and floss regularly to minimize this problem.

Common side effects include, but may not be limited to:

  • dizziness
  • headache
  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • insomnia

Seek medical attention immediately if the following develop:

  • slow heartbeat
  • abnormal eye movements
  • problems with coordination
  • confusion or difficulty speaking
  • muscle twitches
  • blurred vision
  • tingling in the hands or feet
  • changes in mood or behavior
  • painful or prolonged erection lasting more than 4 hours
  • signs of an allergic reaction

Precautions

Do NOT use Phenytoin Sodium Tablets if:

  • You are allergic to any of the ingredients.

  • You use delavirdine.

Antacids containing calcium, magnesium, or aluminum may decrease the absorption of phenytoin sodium. These products should be taken at least 1 hour before or after taking this medication.
