Mefenamic Acid Capsules are a drug used for the short-term relief of mild to moderate pain. This medication is used to treat the pain or inflammation associated with menstrual periods, arthritis, and other conditions. Mefenamic Acid may also be used to decrease blood loss during menstrual periods.

Mefenamic acid is classified as a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). Mefenamic Acid works by stopping the body's production of cyclooxygenase, which causes pain, fever, and inflammation.

What is Mefenamic Acid used for?

How are Mefenamic Acid Capsules used?

This medication is manufactured to be taken orally. Mefenamic Acid Capsules should only be taken up to a week, unless otherwise directed by a doctor.

What dose should be taken?

For menstrual cramps in adults and children over 14 years old, the usual dose is 500mg. Then 250mg is taken every 6 hours, as needed for 2-3 days.

For pain, the usual dose is 500mg. Then 250mg is taken every 6 hours, as needed for up to 7 days.

The dosage is based on medical condition, response to the treatment, age, and weight. Refer to a doctor or pharmacist for guidelines on dosage. Do not exceed what they advise.

Side Effects

As with all pharmaceuticals, some unwanted effects can occur from the use of Mefenamic Acid Capsules.

Common side effects include, but may not be limited to:

  • constipation
  • diarrhea
  • dizziness
  • drowsiness
  • gas
  • headache
  • heartburn
  • nausea
  • upset stomach

  • slurred speech

  • urinating less than usual or not at all
  • pain, burning, or bleeding during urination
  • cloudy or dark urine
  • loss of appetite
  • signs of liver problems, such as jaundice, vomiting/nausea, and severe stomach pain

Precautions

Do NOT use Mefenamic Acid Capsules if:

  • You are allergic to Mefenamic Acid.
  • You have allergic reactions to aspirin or any other NSAID.

  • You have kidney problems, ulcers, or inflammation of the stomach or bowel.
  • You are in the last 3 months of pregnancy.
