Digoxin Tablets are an antiarrhythmic drug used to treat heart failure in adults and children. This medication may be used alone or in combination with other drugs, such as a diuretic or an ACE inhibitor. Digoxin is also used to treat certain types of abnormal heartbeat, such as atrial fibrillation, in adults.

Digoxin is classified in the drug class called antiarrhythmics (antidysrhythmics) or inotropic agents. It is a chemical derived from the digitalis plant. The active ingredient works by inhibiting sodium-potassium ATPase within the heart.

Uses

What is Digoxin used for?

It is used to treat heart failure and atrial fibrillation.

How are Digoxin Tablets used?

This medication is intended to be taken orally.

What dose should be taken?

For heart failure with reduced ejection fraction, the usual dose is 3.4-5.1mcg/kg per dose.

For atrial fibrillation, the usual dose is 3.4-5.1mcg/kg per dose, taken once per day.

Refer to a doctor or pharmacist for more specific guidelines on dosage. Do not exceed what they advise.

Side Effects

As with all pharmaceuticals, some unwanted effects can occur from the use of Digoxin Tablets.

Common side effects include, but may not be limited to:

  • nausea or diarrhea
  • dizziness or weakness
  • headache
  • rash

Seek medical attention if the following develop:

  • gastrointestinal effects (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain)
  • changes in heart rate
  • lightheadedness
  • tarry stools
  • mood or mental changes (such as confusion or hallucinations)
  • breast tenderness
  • changes in vision

Precautions

Do NOT use Digoxin Tablets if:

  • You are allergic or hypersensitive to any of the ingredients.
  • You have ventricular fibrillation.
  • You are being treated with bretylium or calcium chloride.

This medication may not be suitable for people with certain conditions, including:

  • sick sinus syndrome or AV block (without pacemaker)
  • past heart attack
  • bradycardia that has caused fainting
  • Wolff-Parkinson-White Syndrome
  • renal disease
  • electrolyte imbalances
  • thyroid disease
  • recent gastrointestinal illness with vomiting or diarrhea

This medicine should only be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding if the benefits outweigh the risks. Consult a doctor or healthcare professional before treatment.

Many drugs are known to interact with digoxin, such as brigatinib, calcium gluconate, ceritinib, crizotinib, dronedarone, ozanimod, and succinylcholine. This not a complete list of interactions, so please consult with a healthcare professional before treatment.

During treatment with digoxin, it is important to check blood pressure and heart rate daily. It may be necessary to have regular blood tests and to check kidney function.
