Carbamazepine Tablets are used to prevent and control seizures associated with different types of epilepsy. It may be used alone or with other drugs. This drug is also used to relieve some types of nerve pain, like trigeminal neuralgia, and as an adjuvant in the treatment of schizophrenia or bipolar.
Carbamazepine is an anticonvulsant and analgesic drug. The active ingredient is thought to work as a sodium channel blocker. Blocking the sodium channels in the brain reduces the excitability of nerves.

Uses
What is Carbamazepine used for?
It is used to prevent and control focal and generalized seizures caused by epilepsy. Carbamazepine is also used to treat trigeminal neuralgia. It is used with other medications for the treatment of schizophrenia and as second-line therapy for manic and mixed episodes of bipolar disorder.
How are Carbamazepine Tablets used?
This medication is intended to be taken orally. Carbamazepine Tablets should be taken with food.
What dose should be taken?
Recommended dosage may vary based on different medical conditions:
- For bipolar disorder, the usual dose for adults is 200mg, taken twice per day. The dose may be increased as necessary. The maximum dosage is 1600mg per day.
- For epilepsy, the usual dose for adults and children over 12 years old is 200mg, taken twice per day. The maximum dose is 500-800mg, taken twice per day.
- For trigeminal neuralgia, the usual dose is 200mg, taken once per day. The maximum dosage is 1200mg per day.
The dosage is based on medical condition, response to treatment, age, and weight. Refer to a doctor or pharmacist for guidelines on dosage. Do not exceed what they advise.
Side Effects
As with all pharmaceuticals, some unwanted effects can occur from the use of Carbamazepine Tablets.
Common side effects include, but may not be limited to:
- nausea or vomiting
- dizziness
- drowsiness
- constipation
- dry mouth
- unsteadiness or incoordination

Precautions
Do NOT use Carbamazepine Tablets if:

This medication may increase sensitivity to the sun, so use sunscreen, wear protective clothing, and limit long exposure to sunlight.
The use of carbamazepine during pregnancy may be harmful to the fetus. If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, consult a doctor or healthcare professional before taking this medication.
Carbamazepine may decrease the efficacy of hormonal contraceptives.
