What is Calcitriol?

Active Ingredients: Calcitriol

Calcitriol Softgel Capsules are used to treat overactive parathyroid glands (hyperparathyroidism) and metabolic bone disease in some patients with kidney failure. It is also used to treat calcium deficiency (hypocalcemia) in certain patients on dialysis or those with underactive parathyroid glands hypoparathyroidism.

Calcitriol is a hormone-activated synthetic form of vitamin D. Vitamin D helps regulate some types of minerals and the parathyroid hormone. Vitamin D is typically changed to its active form in the liver and kidneys.

Calcitriol in the treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis

This study examined the efficacy of calcitriol compared to placebo in the treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis. It is a double-blind, randomized, parallel clinical trial that lasted 2 years.

It included 15 patients who received a placebo and 12 patients who received calcitriol. It was shown that calcitriol positively affects the total body calcium, bone mineral content of the radius, bone mineral density of the lumbar spine, and radiographic absorptiometry of the middle phalanges. Results showed that calcitriol-treated patients had decreased fracture rates compared with the placebo group.

The conclusion of the study is that calcitriol increases bone mineral density by decreasing bone resorption and this is an efficient product in the treatment and prevention of osteoporosis.
