Alendronate Sodium Tablets are a drug used to prevent or treat osteoporosis (bone loss). The risk of osteoporosis increases as a patient ages, undergoes menopause, or if they are taking corticosteroid drugs for a lengthy period of time. This medicine is also indicated for the treatment of Paget's disease.

Alendronate Sodium is classified as a bisphosphonate. It works by slowing down bone loss.

What is Alendronate used for?

It is used to treat or prevent osteoporosis.

How are Alendronate Tablets used?

This medication is intended to be taken orally. It should be taken before the first meal or beverage of the day. It should be taken with a full glass of water. It is best to stay upright for at least 30 minutes. This medication only works if taken on an empty stomach.

What dose should be taken?

Dosage may vary based on different medical conditions:

  • The usual dose for adults is 5mg, taken once per day. In postmenopausal women (not taking estrogen), the usual dose is 10mg per day.
  • For Paget's disease of the bone, the usual dose is 40mg, taken once per day. The duration for treatment is 6 months.
  • For the treatment of osteoporosis in men or postmenopausal osteoporosis in women, the usual dose is 10mg once per day or 70mg once per week.
  • For the prevention of postmenopausal osteoporosis, the usual dose is 5mg per day or 35mg once per week.

Refer to a doctor or pharmacist for more specific guidelines on dosage. Do not exceed what they advise.

Side Effects

As with all pharmaceuticals, some unwanted effects can occur from the use of Alendronate Sodium Tablets.

Common side effects include, but may not be limited to: • gastrointestinal effects (constipation, diarrhea, gas, etc.)

Seek medical attention if the following develop:

  • stomach pain
  • skin rash
  • heartburn
  • pain in the esophagus

Precautions

Do NOT use Alendronate Sodium Tablets if:

  • esophagus disorders (e.g. esophageal stricture or achalasia) or difficult swallowing
  • difficult standing or sitting upright for 30 minutes
  • low calcium levels
  • kidney issues
  • stomach or intestinal disorders, including ulcers

This medicine should only be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding if the benefits outweigh the risks. Consult a doctor or healthcare professional before treatment.

Many drugs, supplements, and foods are known to interact with alendronate sodium, including calcium or iron supplements, vitamins, antacids and beverages like coffee, tea, soda, or mineral water.

Do not take this medicine before sleeping, as it may increase the risk of side effects.
